Through two three-day Semiconductor STEM camps, the Florida Semiconductor Institute (FSI) and Ecotek Lab immersed students in the exciting world of semiconductors through engaging, hands-on activities designed to build curiosity, creativity, and critical-thinking skills.
Second Session Semiconductor STEM Camp Sparks Curiosity Through Hands-On Learning
Held in June and July 2026, two Semiconductor STEM Camps immersed students in the exciting world of semiconductors through engaging, hands-on activities designed to build curiosity, creativity, and critical-thinking skills. Throughout the camps, participants explored the science and engineering behind the technology that powers everyday life while developing practical skills and confidence.
In the second of the STEM camps, students gained experience with electronic circuits, soldering, semiconductor materials, conductivity testing, programming, microcontrollers, and semiconductor manufacturing processes. Rather than simply following step-by-step instructions, campers were encouraged to experiment, troubleshoot, and learn through trial and error, mirroring the real-world engineering process used by scientists and engineers every day.
One highlight of the camp was a visit to SkyWater Technology, where students stepped inside a working semiconductor manufacturing facility and met technicians and industry professionals. During the visit, students learned firsthand how semiconductors are produced and heard personal career stories that demonstrated the many pathways into Florida’s growing semiconductor industry. The experience helped students connect what they learned in the classroom to real careers shaping the future of technology.
For many students, the impact of the camp extended well beyond the final day.
Parent Elvin Christian shared that his sons continued talking about their experience long after the camp ended. He said the hands-on activities challenged them to think outside of the box, ask thoughtful questions, and learn through experimentation while gaining a deeper understanding of programming, semiconductor processes, and career opportunities.
Perhaps most memorable was the opportunity to meet the professionals at SkyWater Technology, an experience that made learning more tangible and left a lasting impression on students as they explored the innovation and teamwork that drive the semiconductor industry.
By combining hands-on STEM learning with meaningful industry exposure, the Semiconductor STEM Camps inspire young minds, built confidence, and help shape the future workforce that will power future technological innovations.
The camps were made possible through the collaboration of FSI, NeoCity, Ecotek Lab, SkyWater Technology, and dedicated community partners who share a commitment to preparing and inspiring the next generation of innovators.
