What is a SemiClub?

SemiClubs introduce K-12 students to semiconductors and microelectronics in fun, hands-on ways. Through activities, seminars, field trips, and club events, students can explore Florida’s growing semiconductor ecosystem and discover how microelectronics are shaping their world and their futures.

Why Start a SemiClub?

SemiClubs boost student engagement, hands-on learning, and career readiness by connecting science and technology lessons to real-world applications.

By leading a SemiClub, your students will:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of semiconductors and microelectronics
  • Become more engaged in Career and Technical Education (CTE) and STEM learning
  • Apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges
  • Discover exciting career paths in the semiconductor industry

SemiClub Goals

Explore what your SemiClub will focus on based on your grade level. These guiding questions and themes will help shape the direction of your club and set a clear path for success.

SemiClubs at the elementary level are a fun and exciting way to introduce students to the basic ideas behind semiconductors. These clubs focus on sparking curiosity and helping students begin to see how semiconductors connect to the world around them.

Big Picture Questions:

  • What are semiconductors?
  • How do semiconductors work?
  • Why do we need semiconductors, and how do we use them in our daily lives?

Middle school SemiClubs help students connect what they’re learning in science and math classes to real-world applications. Students begin exploring career pathways and considering how they can engage with semiconductor-related activities in high school.

Big Picture Questions:

  • What are semiconductors?
  • What does “zero resistance” really mean?
  • Why are semiconductors important in our daily lives?
  • How are semiconductors changing our world?
  • How can I explore semiconductor opportunities in high school?

High school SemiClubs provide hands-on opportunities to deepen understanding and prepare for future careers. Students will explore real technologies, develop workforce skills, and take on leadership roles within their club.

Big Picture Questions:

  • What are semiconductors?
  • What does “zero resistance” really mean?
  • How do semiconductors connect to the classes I’m taking?
  • What breakthroughs are developing in the semiconductor industry?
  • What career paths or opportunities exist in the semiconductor industry?

How to Start a SemiClub

Semiconductors power all electronic devices and influence a wide range of industries. As the semiconductor sector rapidly grows – especially in Florida – it brings new career opportunities, strengthens the economy, and drives innovation across the state.

The Florida Semiconductor Institute (FSI) is based at the University of Florida and leads statewide efforts in semiconductor research, workforce development, and industry collaboration. FSI’s workforce development team connects students, educators, and families to the semiconductor field through initiatives like SemiClubs.

While FSI does not currently provide direct funding for individual SemiClubs, we offer resources and guidance to help you plan your own fundraising efforts once your club is registered.

Each school has its own process for launching student clubs. First, consult with your school administrator for approval. After that, register your SemiClub with FSI to gain access to our resource hub and step-by-step support.

Absolutely! Our materials are designed for educators of all backgrounds. The lessons are introductory and easy to facilitate – no prior experience in electronics is needed.

For K-5 clubs, teachers typically lead all meetings and activities. For grades 6-12, students can take on leadership roles while teachers serve as advisors. Teachers provide guidance and help with planning events, meetings, and fundraisers. Be sure to follow your school’s specific club advisor guidelines.

SemiClubs align with key subjects like physics, chemistry, computer science, and engineering. They support lessons on electronics and circuitry, while expanding student understanding of real-world STEM applications and careers.
