On June 18, 2024, in Raleigh, NC, FSI Director David Arnold was inducted into the National Academy of Inventors. Dr. Arnold’s portfolio includes 35 U.S. patents, with 8 currently licensed to 4 different companies. Among his notable contributions, he co-invented the microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) microphone chip packaging technology, now used in billions of consumer electronic devices. His work also extends to circuit board audio array technology, which enhances sound localization in smart speakers and mobile devices. Dr. Arnold’s achievements have earned him the UF Technology Innovator Award four times and the UFRF Professorship from the UF Research Foundation.

Dr. Arnold’s impact on the MEMS/semiconductor industry is significant, influencing modern consumers. The MEMS microphone packaging technology has revolutionized consumer electronics, while his microphone array technology is essential for smart devices. Beyond his personal contributions, Dr. Arnold promotes innovation on a broader scale.
Dr. Arnold plays a key role in leading two major NSF-funded research centers. In 2014, he helped establish the NSF Multi-functional Integrated System Technology Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (MIST I/UCRC). This center has thrived under his guidance, resulting in 21 invention disclosures, 6 issued patents, 11 pending patents, and 5 licensed technologies. In 2020, he co-founded and currently co-leads the NSF Internet of Things for Precision Agriculture Engineering Research Center (IoT4Ag ERC). This center has already filed 7 patent applications. As the Innovation Ecosystem Director for IoT4Ag, he encourages innovation, builds industry and stakeholder partnerships, and supports university technology transfer.
