FSI Welcomes Jim Wingert to the Team!

We are pleased to announce that Dr. James (Jim) Wingert has joined our FSI team as an Engineer II!

His primary role is R&D support of the MALA1010 lab and other research support activities. He brings a wealth of experience, and we are lucky to have found him.

Jim earned his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of California, San Diego under advisor Oleg Shpyrko in the Physics Department. His research focus was ultrafast x-ray scattering techniques to study condensed matter phenomena, such as electron-phonon coupling and charge density wave dynamics. He conducted research at Stanford’s Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) and the Advanced Photon Source (APS) synchrotron facility at Argonne National Labs.

Jim previously worked at General Atomics in the DIII-D National Fusion Facility as a Chief Operator, helping run the largest experimental tokamak in the United States. He served as co-chair of the vacuum committee and was responsible for approving any new materials installed on the vacuum side of the machine.

Jim was also recently a stay-at-home father for his young daughter, with whom he is extremely close. Jim is an avid cyclist that formerly raced his bike at the professional level in the United States. He won the prestigious Sea Otter Classic Circuit Race in 2012, held on the famous Laguna Seca raceway in Monterrey, CA.
